This is the bus that was firebombed just outside Anniston, Alabama on May 14, 1961 (Mother's Day) by a group of Klansmen. The riders were savagely beaten, but the mob's apparent plans to burn them to death on the bus didn't work out fortunately.

Today in Anniston, Alabama, there's a historical marker at the place where the bus burned, and a mural across the alley from the old Greyhound bus station:

Were those color pictures in the movie? Those are pretty rare.

After the bus was burned, the local hospital staff refused to treat the freedom riders and were removed from the hospital before the Klan could get a chance to regroup.

This bus was not the only the bus that was attacked.

An hour later, a Trailways Bus was also attacked by Klansmen as it stopped in Anniston and as the bus arrived in Birmingham, it was then later boarded by members of KKK with the assistance of Bull Connors, the chief of the Birmingham Police Department and his officers.

As for which KKK Branch that was responsible for the attacks, it was the Eastview Klavern 13.

Eastview Klavern 13 was one of the chapters of the Knights of The Ku Klux Klan Alabama Branch and was the most violent group in Alabama, they were responsible for number of attacks on both African-Americans and Civil Right Workers.

They were also responsible for the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church at the intersection of North 16th Street and North 6th Avenue in Birmingham on the morning of the 15th September 1963, resulting in the deaths of four young African-American girls.
