I was thinkin' Silver Spur too. Why were they called "Silver"? They weren't all silver. |

Because the very first Rolls-Royce was silver (and called Ghost because it had a quiet engine, Silver Ghost), and they were all named after it. It's a company tradition, and had the cars since have been named after something that implies silentness, Cloud, Phantom, Wraith, Shadow, Spirit etc. Rolls-Royces are quiet because they have gigantic engines that are tuned low, so they don't rev high, giving them smoothness and longevity. Though this does mean they gobble up petrol like nobody's business. -- Last edit: 2006-08-16 15:03:03 |

... obviously, if a person worries about petrol then it does not deserve a Rolls ... ![]() Thanks for the explanation, very interesting ![]() |

Of course, compared to today's cars, a 1 litre hatchback is probably quieter than a Silver Ghost. -- Last edit: 2006-08-16 15:24:27 |

Doesn't have the US-market headlights that were required at the time so must be a grey import. |
