1952 Studebaker unknown Starliner

Appears to be the first '52 Starliner on the site. :)

How does one tell a Commander from a Champion at this distance?

One way, I think, is that the Commander has chrome guides on the front fenders and the Champion will not. Comments??

Also, looks like chrome stone guards on rear fender of Commander and black (rubber?) ones on Champion

I think this car is a Commander based on rear stone guard shape.

Given the same wheelbase it is very difficult to tell them apart from this angle . About the only external difference was the frontal hood emblem : a winged S on the Champions , a large V on the Commanders ( V8 ) .The most obvious difference however is in the cabin with the dashboard layout : on Champions the instruments were since 1950 regrouped in one single large rectangular panel , Commanders had since 1947 three large round instrument panels .

I had a further check : both Champions and Commanders had chrome stone guards but yes , my documents do not show the chrome guides on the Champion's front fenders , so agree with big dave it is a 1952 Studebaker Commander State Starliner Coupe Series 3H.

One factor has been forgotten - the trunklid V-8 emblem.
Since it is present on the subject car, it is a Commander.
So listing.

(Once again on the fender top ornaments - standard on State Commanders and Land Cruisers. Optional on all others. Same as '51.)
(Bright stone guards were present on all Land Cruisers, State Commanders and both Champion and Commander convertibles and Starliner hartops. Other lines all carried rubber guards except for Champion Customs which had no guards. Again, same as in '51.)
