I think the automakers realized it was too much. I would think it was a matter of buyer acceptance and not much uptake on it. It just shows how TV like "Hawaii Five-O" is the perfect 1968 to 1980 American and import car-spotters test. All sorts of "quirky" models that might have gone unnoticed except for their brief guest-starring role.
