So funny! The plot calls for this car hitting a tree at 60mph causing 2 fatalities. But it's a new car so they can't afford to really wreck it. The producers put on a dented hood and skewed it on its hinges, then painted over the front fender and headlight to make it look banged up. Here's a shot of it at 15:01. ...and again at 20:34 They probably used water-based paint. That way, after filming they could put the proper hood back on, spray it down with a garden hose and, voila -- it's all shiny new again! sidebar: @6:45 Dan Mathews sez: “...they’d be alive right now if they had safety belts.” Safety belts WERE available as options as far back as 1949 (Nash).
