Land-Rover eliminated all differentials locks on the Discovery II. 1999, 2000 and some 2001 models still technically had a center differential lock (CDL), but the shift linkage needed to lock it was deliberately left disconnected. 2001-2003 models finally had their crippled CDL replaced by an open center differential. Land-Rover proposed that the Discovery II’s new 4-wheel electronic traction control system could do the work of front, center and rear locking differentials. While traction control was very effective at getting torque to the wheels that needed it, it could not provide a smooth and permanent 50/50 front-to-rear torque distribution (torque split) like a locking center differential. Quietly, Land-Rover reintroduced the center differential lock, along with connected shifter on the 2004 model Discovery II.
