The scene was the reenactment of the Dillinger Gang's Sioux Falls robbery and shootout that occurred outside the Security National Bank and Trust Company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on the morning of the 6th March 1934; three days after Dillinger's escape from Crown Point Jail in Indiana. The robbery had netted $49,500 for the gang, resulting in a share of $8,250 for each gang member. In reality, the gang's getaway car was a green 1934 Packard Super 8 with 1934 Kansas license plates; 13-786 and unlike the scene depicted in the film, Dillinger and gang member, Tommy Carroll wasn't wounded at the Sioux Falls robbery, instead Dillinger and his associate and gang member, John "Red" Hamilton were wounded during the robbery of the First National Bank at Mason City, Iowa a week after the Sioux Falls Robbery on the 13th March 1934, while Tommy Carroll was shot and killed by police in Waterloo, Iowa on the morning of the 7th June 1934.
