1990-92 Nissan Truck "Hardbody" [D21] (based on the logo style which is 1990+, and the hood vents that disappeared in the 1993 model year) with the exception of 2 examples (that should probably be changed to match the rest), the use of "Hardbody" has been considered as a nickname on this site, which essentially it was... though it did creep into factory literature pretty often - as exemplified in the brochure linked below. (sorry to use an eBay link that will disappear eventually, but in a quick search i couldn't find a link with any real longevity). Link to "cgi.ebay.com" |

@ an_unusual_guy, The Naming Convention of these Hardbody's is very peculiar. You have a posted a link to a brochure that officially uses 'Hardbody' as the name, but I have seen some brochures and Owners Manuals that list them simply as 'Nissan Truck'. If we could figure out when they officially started calling them 'Hardbody' I guess we could change the ones that fall after that date. Also I have noticed that all of the ones that you identified as 1986.5 have been labeled on the site as 1987, but if you look at the Owner's Manual in my Comment here: /vehicle.php?id=187942 there was a model year 1986 "Hardbody-style" Truck EDIT, The Plot Thickens, after Searching ebay for owners manuals it looks like the owner's manual always said "Nissan Truck" (at least in 1986, 1989, 1993, and 1994) man I am confused Link to "cgi.ebay.com" -- Last edit: 2010-08-03 09:01:56 |

Or does the name depends on the export-countries? Wiki lists all names: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Frontier I think, in Germany these early ones were named "Pick Up" and the name "Navara" came later, 1996+. The name "Hardbody" I've never seen here. At our Namibia-trip in 2006 we had a 2003-model as rental-car. It had "Hardbody" written on the back (my wife has said "Hardboy" until I told her, that this is something different ![]() But I'm not sure, if Asco ( http://www.kapstadt.de/asco/homepage_E.htm ) has bought their cars in ZA or if they are direct imports from Japan. One interesting detail: I've never seen in Germany the "pure" Single Cab, as we drove in Namibia. All Single Cabs here have the little window behind the doors. The Dual Cabs seems to be identical with the Japanese original (or maybe the ZA-assembled version). |

truly... they did us no favors by applying any logic worldwide, or even within the U.S., to the way that the D21 trucks were named. the term "Hardbody" was applied pretty much randomly in advertising (TV and print), and brochures (either as the title, or within the text) essentially throughout the model run of the D21 trucks. additionally, they were sold as Navara, Pick-Up, King Cab, Camiones, and Hardbody in other markets. the only consistent point is that the D21, in markets where it received a single wall bed with exposed tie downs, was never referred to as a "Hardbody", as Nissan intended the term to indicate the smooth sided, double walled load box. to make matters (only slightly) worse... the first time that the term "hardbody" was used internally by Nissan, was to differentiate the last the 720 model trucks ~ the 1985 and 1986 models with the double walled, smooth sided beds ~ from the earlier models. i never saw that appear in print though, just something i remember hearing tossed around in the parts and service departments. Nissan (Datsun) did something very similar years before, in that the first time the term "Li'l Hustler" was used, it was in print ads for the 521 model pick-ups. Link to "cgi.ebay.com" that was here and gone in the blink of an eye, and soon enough, the term became synonymous with the 620 series pick-ups... to the degree that certain years the 620 brochure was titled "Li'l Hustler". in other years the used the term only for the short box 620, or didn't appear in the brochure at all. i made a year by year list of the way that term was applied here: /vehicle_95891-Datsun-620-1972.html anyway... long story short, i think that the D21 trucks are essentially correct as they are currently listed. my best suggestion would be that we should go in and add "Hardbody" to the U.S. trucks as italicized extra information, the way the many of applicable the Li'l Hustlers have had it added to their names. as for the year... the .5 models always cause a problem. all the trucks that are 1986.5+ could be moved back to "1986", and possibly should be, based on the linked manual above showing 1986 as the first available year. the earliest of the King Cabs, Camiones, Pick-Ups, Navaras, Pathfinders, and Terranos would need to be bumped back a year as well. |

![]() @tonkaTRACKER... based on the manual that you linked to above, as well as a bit of research, i decided that you were right, and that for the sake of continuity ~ even though it didn't sound like too much fun ~ the earliest of these 1986.5 D21 (and the corresponding WD21) trucks should be listed as 1986 models. i went through just now, and rolled back the 1987 examples (the ones that hadn't been based on license validation or some other specific evidence) to 1986. i corrected the nissan trucks and pathfinders, and also did the same for the teranos, and the D21 navara, king cab, and camiones as necessary. i was right... not so much fun. ![]() in the end though, i think they cleaned up nicely. i also added "Hardbody", not as a model, but as additional information to those that have the double-walled bed and were captured within the USA. if at some point we want to move the USA trucks to "Hardbody" as a model name, it wouldn't be that hard to do, but it would really only serve in segregating them for no notable benefit as far as i can see. i'm fairly sure that there are some trucks and perhaps even a few pathfinders that could be made "newer" than 1986 by the bumper styles, but other than a couple trucks, and one 1993 pathfinder that i spotted in with the 1986 examples, i didn't dwell on that, so there is a bit more cleaning to do at some point. |
