1996. In 1998 there was already the all new model. |

I think that is one of the last first series, because it's a 1998 model according to the plate |

Ah, if it is according to plate it can be indeed. |

Brand RENAULT Catalog RENAULT201910 Name Clio II Model Clio II Manufactured 02 1998 Vehicle Type CB0A Vehicle Fabrication Number W002478 --> built in Valladolid (E) Engine D7F720 Engine No F011494 Gearbox Fabrication Number A004706 Drive Left Options Equipment level: E2 BODY-COLOURED BUMPERS --> I think this could be an Up Pack special version for I, a more upmarket version of the RL based Up. Listed with painted bumpers, but actually having black ones: maybe this version was made by the Italian branch removing some features from the RN? ![]() ![]() |

1998 was split between late Gen. 1 (July 1997-January/February 1998) and the gen 2. (which is confirmedly a 98 as it was part of the company's centenary celebration along with the Laguna facelift). To compensate for a model year spanning a year and a half, the following 1999 MY only went from January-April 1999. -- Last edit: 2025-02-01 17:00:51 |

What about MY 2001? Is it for the facelift only or for pre- and post-facelift, according to brochures? -- Last edit: 2025-02-01 17:04:37 |

I originally considered it 2002, but I'm going to peg it at a short 2001. The first facelift brochure is from April 2001, but by August the base cover already uses different screenshots (and Initiale, quickshift and proactive versions added in the October 01 edition, so August is probably a preliminary 02). I now know for a fact that Renault likes to make very short MYs that only last about half a year thanks to the first Laguna brochure. April and June 2001 http://lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/2001-%2031%20I31%20DA.JPG (04/01 only has 6 pages while 06/01 has 36, so it probably really is a preview) August 2001 http://lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/2001-%20CE%20B65%20B1.JPG I think when it's a facelift year, there's always a lot of chaos ![]() -- Last edit: 2025-02-01 17:17:48 |

IIRC also the dCi 82hp was added some months later. |

Phase 3 was late 96 according to Dutch brochures: Link to "autocatalogarchive.com" There's also a French version of this on leboncoin, but the year is too fuzzy to make out. EDIT: The French version has this note on http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/clio.htm So 97-98.5 it is. This might be due to the fact that this appears to be the prerelease brochure, as the new range is only featured from the October 96 edition. As I mentioned before, Renault releases "trailer" brochures giving generic descriptions of the new car a month or two ahead of launch, usually one short and one long version, and the years on these correspond with the calendar year. They should not be used for model year reference, however I would accept them as the beginning month of the new MY. -- Last edit: 2025-02-03 19:33:25 |

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but pretty much up until 2000, Renault MYs can be distinguished by common year by year unique design patterns on the brochure. The Clio II was indeed a 1998, but it was cut short as the 99 MYs were out by July. However, the car remained unchanged until the midcycle update the following January. For 98 the pattern was name in bold letters: http://lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1998-%2038%20I11%20B2.JPG http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1998-%2037%20G11%20B1.JPG http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1998-%2037%20K43%20B2.JPG while for 99 they mostly remained the same but were given bicolor Arial borders on the side: http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1999-%2038%20I11%20B3.JPG http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1999-%2038%20G21%20B3.JPG http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1999-%2038%20K43%20B4.JPG What this means for us, is that any Clio built between July and November 1998 which doesn't have the new trims would be a 99. It also strongly suggests that the phase 3 was a late 96: http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1996-%2035%20C21%20B1.JPG http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/ClioPh3_96Exp.JPG http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1996-%2035.E11.B1.JPG http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1996-%2035%20J35%20B2.JPG I checked to see if there was a late Clio I brochure for 98 with the bold letters, and sure enough: http://www.lesrenaultdepapier.fr/CouverturesCatas/1998-%2037%20C31%20B2.JPG -- Last edit: 2025-02-04 22:14:05 |
