Look closely and you can see that this is a 66 GTO in the rear but the side lower rocker trim is from the 1967! This is some sort of hybrid 1966/67 GTO! I never noticed this until recently…

This GTO went on to be modified by Dean Jeffreys into the Monkeemobile

My take on this would be that perhaps this car was a pre-production model, as as such, not something for sale to the public. If that was the case, Pontiac marketing was probably welcome to something that would otherwise be crushed, so it was put to good use for publicity purposes. Just a possibility. Another possibility is that the scenes with the '67 trim were filmed in the 1966-1967 season when Major Nelson had traded in for a '67. Adding the trim could have given the car a little bit of continuity in filming for us eagle-eyed, reruns mad, car crazy Internet sleuths!!! And as the other comment points out, one of the IDOJ GTOs went on to George Barris shop for customization into one of the two Monkeemobiles. It gave Major Nelson room to get his next Pontiac in a string of Pontiac GTOs and Bonnevilles and perhaps one Firebird?
