I've heard people use the name "Super Beetle" for these VW Beetles with the big tail lights. I take it that wasn't a badge name, though |

No, it wasn't. My guess is a VW 1303S (1303 from 1972–1975; don't know when the S was introduced) |

On US-market these were basically called VW Sedan and from 1971 models they also used the nickname Beetle in sales material for the older style VW. The new models (1302/1302S, on euromarkets) were called Super Beetles instead, this was carried on for the 1303/1303S. S came for 1971 models to show that the car was eqiupped with the larger engine, since that wasn´t evident from the modelnumber anymore. |
