No, no, not mach1 (all mach1´s are Fastbacks), but 1971 Sports Coupe, a limited option only available for a short time in 1971. it had the mach1 grill, hood and side stripes. See this link: /vehicle_20135-Ford-Mustang-1971.html and this Link: Link to "mustang.is" -- Last edit: 2009-09-04 20:39:12 |

Not a Mach 1, and possibly not a Sports Coupe, given the "Mach 1" lettering along with the rest. I suspect a stock hardtop with NASA hood that had the paint and decals added later. -Kurt |

FYI, a genuine Sports Coupe would have a "Mustang" logo where the "MACH 1" badging is, as shown here: http://www.mustangspecs.com/specialty/spring1.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/3909/3421/22271710016_large.jpg And, just to clarify, there is no such thing as a Mach 1 package on the Coupe (or Convertible) bodystyle, except for clones. Likewise, the blackout hood was not used on the Spring Special, and the "MUSTANG" lettering on the trunklid (unique to '71s and present here) was not used on the Mach 1 package, even on said early 1971 models (a smaller "MACH 1" decal above the trunk keyhole replaces it). In short, the possibility of the car coming from the factory like this is next to nil. Seeing the movie took place in 1972, I highly suspect a dealer-modified 1971 Mustang Coupe. They probably masked off the hood and threw a Mach 1 decal package on it to boost sales. -Kurt -- Last edit: 2012-09-20 00:29:41 |

One other thing - note the small chrome molding separating the red paint from the lower black paint. Mustangs equipped WITH the hockey stick side stripes did not come with those moldings. See: http://429mustangcougarinfo.50megs.com/paint_info.htm |

Yet another thing going against it - Mach 1's have dual exhaust tips exiting the rear valance panel (until 1973, when they switched to the standard valance and turn-down exhausts for noise restrictions). This car has a standard valance panel. -Kurt -- Last edit: 2012-09-25 21:23:00 |

Wait a second - this film was made in Mexico, no? If so, there's a very good chance that it doesn't read "MACH 1" on the side at all, but "GT 351" - a Shelby De Mexico product. See: /vehicle_409503-Ford-Mustang-1971.html and /vehicle_287323-Ford-Mustang-1972.html In which case, "1971 Ford Mustang GT 351," built in Mexico for the Mexican market. -Kurt |

Sure, it was filmed in Mexico per IMDb. |

I might have to review it on screen then, and see what that quarter panel says. The Sportsroof was only available - on the Mexican-made '71-73 bodystyle - in '73, so it's possible that there might have been a '71 Mach 1 package offered via Shelby De Mexico or even from factory, but specific to the Mexican models. -Kurt -- Last edit: 2012-09-26 01:16:07 |
