Possibly 1938 US Ford Deluxe.

1937/38 DeSoto?

Based on that better quality thumb, I think this is a 1939 Plymouth De Luxe [P-8], because of the chrome trim that goes around the hood, on 1938 Ford it slides down on the grille and on 1939 Ford it stops just before the grille. Not a 1937/38 DeSoto because of different headlight position.

Edit: a different picture of '39 De Luxe, because the previous one was missing half of its trim:

I don't know - I picture the front as being like on this Dodge: Link to "upload.wikimedia.org"

But I see headlights installed inside the fender

I was going to say 1939 Chevrolet, but the way the trim slopes down isn't agreeing with me. It does match the 37/38 DeSoto though.
What looks like headlights to you is a reflection on the fender.

But this is what a 1937/38 DeSoto looks like from the side:

I don't see headlights like that sitting on a fender in a main picture. Plus the hood vents don't match either.

Mmh, yes, the headlights sit a bit lower. But the trim is good. Perhaps a different mopar of the same vintage?

What about a 1938 Pontiac?

Pretty much what I imagine the front looks like.

I think in the main picture, the car's front fender seems to be more rounded (at the back) than it is on a '38 Pontiac. Plymouth/DeSoto theory seems more likely.

I don't know, I think I should just write a letter to N. Oshima's wife Akiko Koyama and ask her what sort of the late 1930s American Sedan was used in this scene

Anyway, I took another screencap of this, and it appears that the headlights are indeed inside the fender....

With that picture it looks much more like a 39 than a 38, whatever it is. Possibly even a 40.
