No, I checked the DVLA and it's telling me that it's a diesel 2520cc black Austin Taxi/Hire Car A |

One site I use (because it's very quick) often shows UNKNOWN UNKNOWN when the record is dead on most other sites, and the car has presumably been turned into dog food tins many years ago. This FX4 has been untaxed since Sept 93, so a remnant record on DVLA is surprising - most dead records from the last 30-ish years have been systematically culled. |

I use this: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ but if it's not showing up, I use https://motorscan.co.uk/car/VK07EKG (replace VK07EKG with the reg) |

^ There's a wide range of sites on offer - I haven't yet found an ultimate best site. They all use DVLA base data so should be consistent content, but they choose which fields to present onscreen, so sometimes I mix and match between them. Another variable is how quickly they ditch defunct records - some are very quick, others hang onto them for a lot longer. So without meaning to be unhelpful, just experiment and choose whichever work best for you - it's not a search to find out absolutely everything on a plate record, just the info needed for a precise ID. |

The DVLA culls records if the owner makes a statement that their car is damaged beyond repair, deemed undriveable |

Even insurance companies can't make such a statement. You may inform the DVLA that your vehicle has been scrapped, but, until a Certificate of Destruction(COD) has been issued by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), then the DVLA record remains, and an ATF cannot legally issue a COD unless the vehicle is on site, and the VIN can be verified. In my opinion, anyone that lets the "local scrappie" collect their vehicle must be mad, because for forever and a day, you may remain liable for that vehicle. When scrapping a vehicle, the ATF must provide the owner with a COD if requested. When you have scrapped a vehicle, if you checked the taxation status on DVLA a few days later, you should see the message "Vehicle details could not be found" or similar. If the registration mark searched still brings up a record, then your vehicle has NOT been disposed of correctly. |
