Indeed, they are different cars. The one in the first thumbnail is a 1999-2002 model and the taxi on the second thumbnail is a 1999-2000 model with a 1999 Police Interceptor NYPD car to the right of it. |

The taxi in the first thumbnail is fake, probably an ex-police car -- Last edit: 2008-11-18 02:38:18 |

Is it normal practice to transform old police cruisers into taxi cabs? |

Not for NYC taxis, it is never done there. But pretty much every other taxi in the country is an ex-police car. |

![]() Would you be able to tell me if those are ex-police cars? |

Tijuana taxis? Well I can tell you that the box-body Caprice is for sure not a 9C1 (police car model). I don't know about the rest, especially since that Caprice in the foreground has aftermarket wheels. I seriously doubt that the 1992 Crown Victoria to the right was a former police car since it has a black b-pillar, but it's possible. |

Yeah, that's Tijuana. We got an old box-body Caprice taxi like that one from the border to the airport in summr 2007. All of the border taxis there seem to consist of Crown Vics and Caprices. Interestingly, the police station in Rosarito Beach still has several 93-95 Crown Vics in service and lots of 95-97 ones. I wondered if they were bought used from the States. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures though. It's pretty interesting over there as far as cars are concerned. There's a few cars that have been natively sold there, but the vast majority consists of what seems to be used American cars. Around there, you'll very often see older cars with California or Arizona plates with long expired tags, some over 10 years past that date. I saw one Honda Civic driving around with an expiry date of April 1996. |

Being so close to the border, you might see a lot of those American cars in Northern Mexico. Many of the police forces in Baja California also use old American police cars, although I've noticed they've acquired, as of late, many newer models, including new Crown Vics and Dodge Chargers. |
