I’d need to do some research, and I don’t recognise the driver. The thumbnail has in the group Woolf Barnato, peering through the flowers. -- Last edit: 2024-08-13 14:45:36 |

I found this from Brooklands in October 1929. F.C. Clement behind the wheel, Jack Barclay behind him. |

The thumbnail appears to be from the 1930 Le Mans, according to this photo which says it's a 6.6L Bentley. Glen Kidston is apparently the other driver. -- Last edit: 2024-08-13 14:16:15 |

Main: 1929 Brooklands 500 Miles, Bentley 4½ Litre #TX3246, Jack Barclay/Frank Clement (GB), winner. Registration: YW 5758. Body: Vanden Plas Le Mans Sports. Also here Thumb: 1930 Le Mans, Bentley Speed Six #LB2332, Woolf Barnato/Glen Kidston (GB), winner. Registration: MT 3464. The famous ‘Old No. One’ after it had also won the 1929 event. Vanden Plas body. Advertised in 1963 after a complete rebuild for £3250. May also have raced at 1932 Indianapolis 500 - a strange quote found "It is stated above that the car was at the Indianapolis 500 and Clive Dunfee was killed. He was killed in the car at Brooklands in the 500 mile race when he lost control and the car went over the banking". Either wires have got crossed or Dunfee was - temporarily at least - immortal. |

Clive Dundee was killed in the 1932 B.R.D.C. Brooklands 500 mile race. He was second driver to his brother Jack, having replaced B. O.Davies (General Manager of Jack Barclay 1930-63). Ex Wikipedia:- “Beresford Clive Dunfee (18 June 1904 – 24 September 1932) was a British racing driver, one of the "Bentley Boys" of the 1930s, who was killed in a dramatic accident at Brooklands. Dunfee was the third of four sons of Colonel Vickers Dunfee and the younger brother of Jack Dunfee, also a motor racer. He took part in the 1930 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the same year married the actress Jane Baxter one of the leading ladies of the British cinema in the Thirties. In 1932 the Dunfee brothers raced the BRDC 500 Miles Race at Brooklands, in the "Old Number One" Bentley Speed Six, with a brand new 8-litre engine installed. After the first driving stint Jack Dunfee was in fourth place when he entered the pits. Clive took over, and shortly after, in passing Earl Howe's Bugatti, he went too high up the banking, putting the wheel of his car over the lip. The car cartwheeled over the top, hit a large tree and plunged down through the trees to the road below. Dunfee was thrown out and killed instantly. His wife was watching the race when he crashed to his death.” -- Last edit: 2024-08-13 21:24:20 |
