I didn’t realise we got the facelift MkII as a saloon at all. I’ve wondered for a while why saloons seem to be so much more popular in Ireland than they are in the UK. |

Not so much that saloons were particularly popular in Ireland, more that UK was much more hatchback-fixated than most markets. So 4 doors almost always struggled here when hatch counterparts were offered. When I was getting loads of fleet rentals in 90s and 00s, I ended up with either type fairly often - eg Cavs, Primeras, Rover R8s, Escort/Orion, Astra/Belmont, P306 etc. Saloons were usually quieter and felt more refined due to separated boot, so more pleasant on long trips, and often the boots were bigger than the hatch bays. My dad's P306 TD saloon felt a smooth almost luxurious thing compared to the hatch, despite being average spec. Focus saloons only really sold to older folk, which gave Ford a good niche for Mk1 Ghias, but post-retirement these folk don't replace their cars very often, so demand for Mk2 was minimal as Mk1 buyers were happy to keep trundling along without being tempted by newer offerings. And I don't remember any Mk2 saloons being dumped into rental fleets, so I guess they were rare things where Ford didn't try very hard. |
