RAM 35 was a reasonably famous B-list racing Sprite, built by John "Paddy" Gaston on a 1958 demonstrator, progressively modified during a successful track career 1959 onwards, gaining a supercharger, Speedwell (or lookalike) fastback rear, Alexander bonnet and lots of other gubbins. Interesting later history as Gaston sold it in 1966 to John Britten who fitted a BMC F3 engine, but crashed and burnt it out on his debut event. Oily bits then switched into a 1962 Lenham-bodied Midget which was also raced successfully and registered SS 1800. Britten then developed the Arkley SS retro bodykit for knackered Spridgets, selling about 900 in 1970-75, and still available today. Britten's 1970s brochure/PR pics usually wore the SS 1800 plate, so in theory might be yet another transformation of RAM 35 in a woodman's axe scenario. But that's a bit of a stretch .... (compiled from a mix of book info and this page which includes a modern RAM 35 replica, alleged at the time to have the original RAM 35 chassis, but now confirmed it doesn't). |
