Uncommon saloon model (these were rare on the MKVI and the Orion name ceased a year or so before this facelift).

Shortly before an annual holiday one year my fuel injected Astra flying machine was t-boned in an accident. My kindly employer gave me a vehicle from the car pool as an expedient measure, so we toured the lakes for ten days in a non turbo diesel Orion with about 90k miles on it. On return I was presented with a new Cavalier turbo-diesel, which exceeded my expectations.

Would I be right to surmise your holiday was characterised by loud yet leisurely progress which made the Cavalier seem a revelation?

It certainly was. The thing was so slow that at junctions across major roads I felt at a loss as to whether it would accelerate quickly enough to get through the gaps, the demise of the Astra having been under those circumstances when a car pulled out and I couldn’t miss it. The Isuzu engined Cavalier 1.7 turbo diesel and I did 94k miles in 3 years, it then was demoted to factory parts-fetcher. The last time I saw it, it was suspended on the forks of a stacker truck having a punctured wheel changed. Swarf!

Company policy being what it was, my last two cars were Golf tdi estates which were excellent. We were all then offered worthwhile pay rises to buy off our company cars, and I bought myself a new Audi A4 Avant tdi which, while a nice enough car, was not worthy of the extra money it cost over the Golf I had before.

Agree those Escort/Orion n/a diesels were awful, but the Maestro n/a diesels were much much worse - lousy engine, acceleration only existed in the brochures, and a gearbox which only agreed to select your chosen gear on the third Thursday of every month.
