The number of then-new Chevrolet cars destroyed in this film under undignified circumstances is off-putting, no matter how much I love James Bond and Roger Moore. That being said, the consolation came in one of the posts regarding Sherriff Pepper's 1973 Impala Police Car and that these were likely pre-production/ press car models not intended for sale. This is not fact but speculation, but certainly seems logical considering all this was filmed in October 1972 as per Roger Moore's excellent "James Bond Diary". The cars would have served their purpose by that time and ready for scrap. Again, this is just cnjecture, but it would be cool to find out from a production manager / buyer associated with the film who could confirm this and explain the arrangement. I wouldn't be surprised if this wholesale and embarassing destruction turned GM and Chevrolet off completely from product placement in future Bond films as they have not returned since! I read in an issue of "Classic and Sportscar" magazine profiling the "You Only Live Twice" Toyota 2000GT convertible that the original Camaro was being considered for use. It was only because Toyota was willing to provide a customized open version of the 2000GT coupe that it won the role over the Camaro. |
