This scene was an reenactment of the attempted murder of Sheriff Pusser and the murder of his wife, Pauline who were both shot as they were driving past the New Hope Methodist Church on New Hope Road in McNairy County, Tennessee on the morning of the 12th August 1967.

According to the investigation, prior to the ambush, Sheriff Pusser had received a call at the Pusser Family home about a disturbance on New Hope Road and left the house enroute to the disturbance with his wife in company.

As Pussers' vehicle passed the church, a second vehicle containing the gunman armed with a 30-calibre Carbine, pull up alongside and open fire on the Pussers' vehicle, killing Pauline Pusser and wounding Sheriff Pusser in the jaw.

After the attack, Pusser suspected those who were responsible for the attack were:

Kirksey Nix - Leader of the Dixie Mafia based at Biloxi in Harrison County, Mississippi, convicted of the murder of greengrocer executive, Frank Corso who was shot during a burglary on his family home in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana in the early hours of the 11th April 1971.

As he was making his getaway from Corso's home, Corso's wife had shot at Nix with her husband's gun, hitting Nix in the lower back.

For Corso's murder, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana near the Louisiana-Mississippi State Line where he ran a "Lonely-Hearts" Scam, targeting gay single men.

Nix was later convicted for the murders of local circuit court judge, Vincent Sherry and his wife and local councilwoman, Margaret who were both shot by Texas-based Dixie Mafia hitman, Thomas Holcomb on the orders of Nix at their home in Biloxi, Mississippi on the night of the 14th September 1987.

The detectives who investigated the murders had originally thought that the Sherry murders were the result of Margaret Sherry's plans to run for Mayor and had planned to go after both the Dixie Mafia and their associates within the local police and the local government.

Information received in a later investigation carried out by former Sheriff's Deputy and Mississippi State Police Officer turned Private Investigator, Rex Armistead from Nix's cellmate and former Dixie Mafia associate, Bobby Joe Fabian had revealed that the motive in the Sherries murders was that the money made from Nix's Lonely-Hearts Scam (totaling over $100,000) was being skimmed by Judge Sherry's former law partner and later Mayor of Biloxi, Peter Halat.

To avoid being killed, Halat had falsely named Sherry as the one who skimmed the money, resulting in Nix to order the murder of Judge Sherry.

Margaret's murder occurred because Halat had warned Nix during a visit in prison that killing Judge Sherry would increase Margaret's chances for Mayor and give her motive to go after the Dixie Mafia and their associates within the local government and the police, resulting in Nix to order the murder of Margaret Sherry.

To carry out the murders, Nix contacted his associate and bar owner in Biloxi, Michael Gillich who hired Holcomb who then received the pistol from Nix's girlfriend, Sheri Lara Sharp after receiving it from Dixie Mafia enforcer, John Ransom.

Gary McDaniel - Dixie Mafia hitman and burglar, fled to Mississippi after Pauline Pusser's murder, later arrested for the attempted murder of a Mississippi prosecutor before fleeing to Texas, shot dead by an unknown gunman in Quitman, Texas on the 8th February 1969.

After the killing McDaniel, the gunman then dumped the McDaniel's body into the Sabine River, it was believed that Sheriff Pusser hired the gunman to track down and kill McDaniel.

Carl White - Known as Towhead, the leader the Dixie Mafia sub gang, the Stateline Mob based at Corinth, Mississippi, was the boyfriend of local brothel madam, Louise Hathcock who was shot dead by Pusser during an attempt to arrest Hathcock for possession of stolen whiskey at Hathcock's place, the Shamrock Motel in Corinth, Mississippi on the morning of the 1st February 1966, returned to Mississippi after Pauline Pusser's murder, shot dead by small-time criminal, Berry Smith in the parking lot of the El Ray Motel on US Highway 45 at Corinth, Mississippi on the 4th April 1969.

Like McDaniel's murder, it was believed that Sheriff Pusser had hired Smith to track down and kill White.

George McGann - Conman and hitman based out of Texas, was named in at least 30 murders that he committed on the orders from the Dixie Mafia and was also named in the assassination of US President, John F Kennedy, fled to New Mexico shortly after the Pauline Pusser's murder, later spent time in several prisons across New Mexico.

After being released, McGann returned to Texas where he shot dead by Ronald Weeden in Lubbock, Texas on the night of the 30th September 1970.

It was believed that Weeden killed McGann in an act of retaliation for McGann kidnapping Weeden and holding him hostage earlier that night.

Carmen Gagliardi - North End Mafia enforcer based out of Massachusetts and associate of the North End Mafia leader, Jerry Angiulo, was on the run after being named in the murder of North End Bartender and associate, Joseph Lanzi who shot on orders of Angiulo on the 18th April 1967, returned to Massachusetts after Pauline Pusser's murder where he was arrested for Lanzi's murder on the 23rd December 1968.

Gagliardi was convicted of Lanzi's murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment where he died of a drug overdose in prison in January 1975.
