This is actually the Starsky & Hutch Torino that made a guest appearance in the first episode.

In the picture showing the back of General Lee, take special note of the crossed flags beneath the rear window. They didn't make it past the first few episodes. All of the early "Georgia" Generals had the flags, None of the "California" Generals had them.

I never noticed that, Interesting fact, Thanks

Why are Starsky & Hutch in the Dukes of Hazzard?

It was a car that just happened to be in the Warner Brother's fleet. IIRC, a decal-less General Lee makes an appearance in another WB show.

Here's another interesting fact about a decal-less General...if you watch the first episode closely, when Rosco is chasing the General around the town square, there is an unfinished, decal-less orange 1969 Charger parked in one of the parking spaces. Apparently they needed a car to park there to fill space, so they simply grabbed the unfinished General... It is easiest to catch this if you have the DVD set, where you can slow down the chase, as you can only see it for a split second. Also, the first episode is the only one where Rosco's name is spelled "Roscoe". Look for it on the orphanage hanging banner at the end.

Ford Motor Company actually produced a 'Starsky and hutch' special edition model in 1976. Warner Brothers only made the later 2004 Starsky and Hutch movie, not the original Starsky and hutch series. This was was made by ABC. There would not have been any Starsky & Hutch Ford Torinos in Warners lot in 1979.

The car mentioned above, the Torino shown in the very first Dukes of hazzard episode 'One Arm Bandits' was a rental car picked up by the car co-ordinator of the Dukes production company for just one days filming.

Hope that clarifies a few things!

To be precise, the IMDB says that Starsky and Hutch was made by Spelling-Goldberg Productions for ABC.

Actually, I believe in the commentary they mention that this car was owned by one of the crew. It was 'aquired' for the junkyard sequence. Quite a suprise to see Starsky's Torino in the Dukes running around with the General!

wasnt the Torino a '74 in Starsky and Hutch?

actually i know the show and episode you're referring to.. it was knight rider's season 1 "give me liberty or give me death" and KR is not WB, its universal.. i'm pretty sure in that case the producers were poking fun at the dukes of hazzard since the car is a virtual copy of general lee other than the flag and 01's and the 2 drivers are moonshiners that have made their car run on the stuff.

The Starsky and Hutch cars were 74 weren't they?

Jamesj13 US

Actually, they were 1974-1976, since they had little to no change in appearence for all three of those years. Although you may notice that the car has both red and chrome mirrors in different scenes of certain episodes of Starsky and Hutch.

The original Ford Gran Torino that was used in the pilot "Starsky and Hutch" movie, back in 1975, was customized and was either a '74 or most likely a '75 year model. They just decided to "jack" the back up a little and paint it like (as David Soul-aka "Hutch" stated in the show and the name stuck for the rest of the series) a striped tomato to make it unique. Paul Michael Glaser (aka Starsky) who the car supposedly belonged to absolutely hated the thing and tried to wreck it for fun while filming episodes--LOL! Later because of the series' popularity Ford did release a specialized line of "Starsky and Hutch" Gran Torinos in 1976.

So, this is most likely as falcon 74 stated:

"Starsky and Hutch" was produced by ABC and not Warner Bros so in 1979 they would not have had an actual show car on the lot for "Dukes." It's most likely one of the specialized Ford cars that the "Dukes" crew member owned and used for this scene.

that's a '74, same year as the one from Starsky and Hutch.

I don't believe so. "Starsky and Hutch" started in 1975 (possibly using a 74 or 75 Torino as the first car, but 76 models were eventually implemented and finished out the show) but Ford wouldn't have started making the special "Starsky & Hutch" Torino edition until sometime in 76 when that show was at its popularity peak. We've already established that this Torino from the "Dukes" episode was one of the special edition Ford cars owned by a "Dukes" filming crew member, and not an actual "Starsky & Hutch" car (since the shows were filmed at totally different studios) so this is most likely a 1976 model.

I believe this is a 76. I seem to remember reading that one of the crew members owned this car and it was one of the 1000 1976 special edition cars that Ford made.

blk95ta US

not only that, but this was filmed in and around Covington, GA. Not anywhere near any studios in Hollywood. The Dukes didn't start filming in Hollywood until episode 6.
