The picture looks to have been taken in the 1920s. I wonder if it is one of the WW1 armoured cars with its armour removed, but the radiator is later. It may even be a New Phantom. |

The number plate is a British trade plate issued in Derby for use by businesses where vehicles are not always used on the road or are frequently changed as in the garage trade. Behind the vehicle is what looks like an aero engine crank case lower half hanging from the crane. I think that this is the Rolls-Royce Derby works hack. I'm inclined to agree that it is a New Phantom. |

The aircraft under construction inside the hangar is the Supermarine S6B seaplane which won the Schneider trophy in 1931. It was powered by a Rolls Royce R type engine (2,300 HP!) which hasn't yet been fitted to the aircraft and can clearly be seen in the bottom right of the picture. I think, therefore, that the assumption that this was Rolls Royce's own delivery vehicle is correct, but they were being a bit cheeky using trade plates for delivering an engine, as the Rolls factory was in Derby and the Supermarine factory was in Southampton, some 170 miles away (trade plates are used to avoid paying road tax, but only for collection and delivery of the vehicle itself, or for test drives). The truck itself is a Phantom II. As an aside, the Supermarine S6B formed the basis of Supermarine's most famous creation - the Spitfire. |
