An interesting specimen. It has a third, central headlamp ( like on the later 77 a ). Not typically found on the earliest 77 models..

Simply amazing. It is curious that the Citroen Traction is from the same year and will go down in history for being a revolutionary ... The truth is that next to this Tatra, it seems light years away

Maybe if the whole country wasn't thrown under a German bus the Tatra would've had a better chance... :/

Gongora, while accepting your view concerning the consideration given by the Tatra’s designers to airflow and to aesthetics, I feel that you miss two points.

1. Rear engine, rear wheel drive has been proven by many years of experience to be a blind alley. It works on buses, but not for passenger cars, and suggests a certain conservatism on the part of the designers who could have gone further in their thinking and organised front wheel drive, the only major additional complexity being the drive shaft joints.

2. The Tatra gives every impression of design regardless of expense. Everywhere you look, from the compound curves to the exotic alloys used for the engine block and gearbox casing bespeak no pressure from the estimating department, whose brief would have been, at Citroën, to ensure the design of something that could be sold in opposition to cheaply engineered Renault and Peugeot competition. You cannot deny the success of the Traction as a car that appealed to its market.

I've been fell in love streamlined Tatras long time ago, before Internet era. ;) The styling was 15-20 years ahead of time, with no doubt. However, Traction Avant's steel chassis & body structure was MUCH more advanced and modern than T77 with wooden skeleton. Newer T87 & T97 matched Traction's modernity level.
In alternative history, without WWII, the large streamlined Tatras would continue to lead the league of niche, exotic & expensive cars. Maybe this way...

Hypothetical 1956 Tatra 197 Coupe. (However, today I can say, I was a bit conservative stylist).

There is repeated urban legend that Tatra 97 was widthraw because would be strong market competitor of kDF Innenlenker. What?! :wow: With price tag 4-5 times more? Tatra 97 was 40% more expensive than not cheap Mercedes 170V.

That's probably late 1st serie sample, like this, just before 77a.

I've seen stories that Ledwinka's designs for Tatra - maybe not this particular version, but later 1930s evolutions such as the V570 prototype? - were strong influences on the template for Hitler's People's Car competition and on Porsche's winning design. So this philosophy spawned the Beetle. And with Tatra still making trucks, it is claimed to be the second-oldest continually-operating motor vehicle manufacturer in the world, after Peugeot.

BTW, I see many reminiscences of streamlined Tatras on 'Ligthyear One' Dutch solar-electric car.
