The fuzzy picture is not helpful.

Pretty certain it’s a Minx Carbodies drop head coupé, but whether it’s a 1938/9 New Minx, or a 1940-47 Phase 1 is hard to see.
There appears to be a bonnet handle, indicating a longitudinally split bonnet, so, I’m saying Phase 1.

Sorry, brain fade…..1938 New Minx.

Not Phase 1.

Nor a Magnificent, it’s the short lived 38/9 New Minx, look at the radiator grille.

We don't have any identified 1938-39 New Minxes - are we missing a trick?? If we have some unrecognised, where would they be lurking?? (I'm stuck without being able to check books eg Robson for info).

It’s in S&G, but could wait until you can look.

With acknowledgment to Sedgwick and Gillies “A to Z of cars of the 1930s” Bay View Books. 1990.

/vehicle_933769-Hillman-Minx-Magnificent-1938.html, this is incorrectly identified, I believe it is not a “Magnificent” but a 38/9 “New” Minx.

Robson describes the 38/9 cars as “facelifted Minx Magnificent”.

He further says it lasted until the introduction of the Phase 1 monocoque “in late 1939”. I wonder where S&G got the “New Minx” from?

The 1938 Minx brochure proudly states "The New Minx" on the cover (or alternatively "Hillman Proudly Present The New Minx", but I guess the something similar would have happened most years so not a very solid hook to hang hats on. The 67 Arrow Minx was initially promoted as "The New Minx" at its launch - I can remember the brochure.

The word “Magnificent” appears to have been stricken from the hyperbole. Perhaps that might be a clue?

Agreed the facelift is no longer a Minx Magnificent, merely a new Minx.
The 'New' part for 1938/9 was only a sales description for the car, which had a restyled radiator grille and full-width bumpers.

So we should drop the “Magnificent” from the title and just say “Hillman Minx Drophead Coupé by Carbodies”?

So what do we want to call these 38-39 batch?
- just plain Minx would create a new nest of entries which I'm uneasy about doing - they'd get lost
- New Minx doesn't seem justified, and again has the risk of creating a new nest where they'd disappear, this time showing separately from the sequence of Minx versions, so less obvious
- Minx Magnificent may not be correct, but it's not demonstrably wrong, and keeps similar Minxes together, with the 38-39 date allowing clear identification.

So I vote to stay as we are - it works in a way we're used to, and without really causing hiccups.

Well, they are different, as the brochure goes to great lengths to broadcast, but if it causes too much difficulty….

I'm reluctant to keep the 'Magnificent' part of the name, however both the National Motor Museum and South Australia's Hillman Car Club retain it for the facelift models, so I guess its acceptable.

Fair enough. I’ll keep my powder dry for another day.
