Very weird car for the main characters. If there's no idea, than list this as Made for Movie "Star Dust". |

I was looking at some old pictures of Tokyo Auto Salon events (annual auto show of customised cars) from the 1980s and I came across this website article covering the 1983 event. There was one car in one of those pictures that caught my attention. It's not exactly the same; for instance the one in the following picture has a roof with a normal, uncut windshield, different seats, wing mirrors, different wheels, color, but apart from that, I think it looks pretty much the same (maybe it was customised even more, later in its life?): ![]() (the link to the full-size of the original picture) (the link to the coverage of the event) If my app translates his name correctly, it was built by Katsunobu Takada and the car is called ダットシン (Dattoshin or Dat Shin). Judging by the amount of these cars that can be found on the image search if you google ダットシン , it could mean that it wasn't a one-off/made-for-movie example, but a genuine kit-car manufacturer, and the base was most likely a Datsun Truck [720] according to this page. Edit: ok, so according to one twitter account post, he made a total of 37 coupes and 1 station wagon between 1982-1987. No mention of any convertible, but perhaps this one was customised by the owner or the movie studios?? The last issue remains: how to properly give this a name? -- Last edit: 2020-08-10 00:52:43 |

Looks like you nailed it, I was wondering why the doors - including A and B-pillars, and even cowl area - were so different from the rest. Even the six lug wheels match. (Dat Shin, a reference to Datsun? Custom Roadster based on Datsun pickup truck [720] ? |

John, I was wondering much the same.... Is it coming or going.... It would at least have been the first Pushmepullyou on the site.... ![]() -- Last edit: 2020-08-10 03:36:40 |

Do I sense a hint of scepticism, maybe even a slight dislike, from you two? |

It looks like 3 different cars that crashed together and just kept driving. I have to wonder if GM saw this and got the idea for the SSR? -- Last edit: 2020-08-10 10:23:55 |

Initially I thought I'd call it Dat Shin, as 38 examples seemed like enough to justify it as a low-volume kit car company and it does appear to have a badge of some sort (seen on 1st thumbnail and other examples on the internet) which might say Dat Shin (with a space), but I can't find any records saying that it was marketed as an independent company (like Mitsuoka, for instance). Calling it Custom Made Dat Shin for now, unless there's a disagreement. |
