According to a book I read several years ago (I cannot at the moment remember the title), the fact that many early cars indeed were right hand drive can be explained. When a car is driven at present, the persons within is very protected to the elements, but also to an outside attacker. However, that wasn't the case when waggons were pulled by horses, and as a result the waggoneers had to defend themselves by any means available. And as most persons were right handed, that meant they could hold the reins with the left hand and thus be able to defend themselves with the right hand. Hence it became natural to drive on the left hand side of the road. And this eventually also became to be the law, which was decided by the king. That was alright for centuries, but one major problem came about when the French Revolution were executed. Because after that nothing could be accepted that had been, at any time, decided by the king. And as a result it was decided that one would drive on the right hand side instead. But that didn't change the fact that most persons were right handed, so most people continue to sit on the right hand side. It wasn't until overtaking became to be a problem that manufacturers changed from right hand drive to left hand drive when driving on the right hand side. -- Last edit: 2020-08-03 21:55:42 |

@andrepa: Still I'm not certain this is the whole truth. But it's a nice story... |

I'd agree with a Simplex 28/32. But isn't it called Tourenwagen instead of Phaeton and was already from 1904? http://www.traumautoarchiv.de/html/7303.html |
