I know the pic is small, but I think it's rare enough for it's on page |

Probably 1963 S4 for chrome. S3 and earlier had numberplate on body below tailgate. -- Last edit: 2014-04-17 15:30:43 |

It is a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III - for sure! Small bumper overriders and Silver Cloud III badge on the rh lower part of the bootlid |

The RR SC3 has its own page with several captures - /vehicle_140458-Rolls-Royce-Silver-Cloud-III-1963.html . |

Pity we can't read the number plate. As for position of the plate, my father had a 1960 Series II estate with a square plate on the tailgate - just as on the car in the photo (though this one is not Series II). Estates are harder to date and identify than saloons. |

The rear plate position was one of those ideas which seemed to work, but I could not get any confirmation for. I always think of plates on body as early and plates on tailgate as late because that's how I remember seeing Hawk and Super Snipe estates when I was a kid, and it is a trend supported by the (incomplete) selection here - http://www.simoncars.co.uk/humber/hawke.html . And it seemed to work OK when matching Estate trim features against the various Series for each model, although as you say the Estates are a lot more difficult. Plus there is the imcdb context that if you suggest a rule and no-one comes back to argue against it after several applications, it's probably either correct or approximately correct enough to be workable. So from your comments, not as reliable as I'd hoped but I think it still has some legs and worth keeping in mind if supporting evidence from other trim detail available. This one for instance smells late for simple side trim and single colour, so S4 feels right and I'd be tempted to push it to S5. But I can't justify it on anything stronger than a hunch. |
