I wonder if the Poona is the ship we see being loaded with cars for Vancouver? The Poona was built in Hamburg in 1952 and operated by the East Asiatic Company (EAC) out of Denmark. In 1971 the Poona was in Gothenburg when chemical barrels in the cargo hold were ruptured, ignited, and then exploded. The fire burned for days, ultimately killing three people and resulting in total loss of the ship. http://www.shipspotting.com/ships/ship.php?imo=5282081 In Vancouver in 1960: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2647391 A summary of the fire and explosion: http://loostrom.com/kosov/separatasidor/accidentspdf/21poona.pdf There are a couple of pictures post-explosion here: http://www.strannevik.se/Gamla%20foton/Goteborg/gbg-foto.html -- Last edit: 2020-05-01 00:33:09 |

It is supremely ironic that, after years of transporting cars wIthout fuel in their tanks, the ship burned out due to some stuff in a barrel. |
