Didn't the Hornet have wire-spoked wheels? |

The last of the Wolseley Hornet saloons 1934/5 had artillery wheels .I have an ad published in Good Housekeeping July 1935 pp 98-99 clearly showing the car with artillery wheels. It mentions a price of £ 185 and £ 9 tax |

This is almost certainly a Wasp, 1935- 1936, with pressed steel wheels. The bonnet (hood) and car overall is too short for a six cylinder Hornet. It had a four cylinder, 1069cc overhead camshaft engine. 5815 Wasps were built- about twice the output of the better known 'Hornet' over the same period. This was the last OHC Wolseley design before the infamous Leanard Lord got his hands on the whole Nuffield Empire and churned out Wolseleys that were little more than badge engineered Morrises. The Wasp was a nice little car. These small Wolseleys were smaller than the similarly priced 'deluxe' 10hp cars from Austin, Hillman and others but they were nicely made and had more sophisticated engineering- at a time when side valve engines were still dominant in the UK small car market. Not everyone was keen on OHC engines, though. In those days engines needed to be 'de-coked' about every 10- 12,000 miles and that required removal of the cylinder head: that was a relatively easy job on a side valve but no task for the owner driver if his car had an overheard camshaft engine and expensive if carried out by a garage. Preserved Wasps are quite rare. Although the great majority of Hornets were family saloons it was also produced as a smart open sports model, quite a few of which survive- so it's name is better known today. -- Last edit: 2010-03-24 17:48:44 |
