Cowley. No chrome stripe above front wheel, no chrome insert in rear windscreen surround, no overriders, no opening quarter lights in front doors means Cowley. Also, if you can see front grille Cowley is paint only, Oxford has vertical chrome strips. No heater, no temp gauge, vinyl upholstery, vinyl mats and 1200cc engine with lower ratio back axle and cheaper tyres. If this car has a 1500cc engine it’s a retrofit. Dad bought one, new, in October 1955 PUK394 supplied by Bradburn and Wedge of W’ton. It was £702, the Oxford was £740, it was so gutless that he spent the £38 which he had said he couldn’t afford having a 1500cc engine fitted. Our earlier Series MO Oxford had brought a whole new meaning to gutless, so I suppose he thought the Cowley would be okay, but it wasn’t. The Mk3 version had the 1500cc engine as standard, but our 57 Mk3 was an Oxford, bought somewhat second hand as he had bought a house in between, 364 PRE, with the optional Manumatic clutchless transmission fitted, I think it came from Charles Clark in Stafford. -- Last edit: 2019-07-09 12:44:58 |
