Plate checks return 1974, and apparently it's still taxed. ![]() |

Brits abroad with the yellow strap-on headlight covers, sold from all good accessory shops at the time, or in this case because of the AA logo on the GB plate from the AA continental travel pack.. |

Did the yellow headlight covers also deflect the beam? |

Yes - to prevent the RHD beam direction shining across into LHD drivers' eyes. Everything was simple until mid-60s - all Brit headlights were round and made by Lucas in a set range of sizes, so the covers came in a similar standard choice. There was a complication with covered lights - eg E-Type Jag - so you'd either take the covers off and fit the yellow conversion covers, or just paint the light glass. Then Brit cars started adopting rectangular lights (eg Viva, Hunter etc) - usually Lucas so these could be cover matched, but if foreign suppliers used (eg Cibie or whoever) they needed non-standard yellow covers. And the lights of whatever shape needed a lip behind the glass to clip the covers onto which Lucas always had, but other makes didn't always have. I don't know what happened if Brits went abroad but avoided France, so didn't need yellow covers. Vague memory there were also clear covers to achieve the beam direction conversion task, but more difficult to enforce so I guess most folk didn't bother. |

I grw up with my father putting black stickers on the headlights for summer holidays in France. The stickers were printed with outlines for different models, and you had to cut out the correct shape for your car. |

I'd forgotten the sticky tape technique, but my dad didn't like it for some reason - did it make the lights too dim?? |
