American LaFrance

Tha cab looks like a 700, but the quad-headlights makes me think otherwise.

This is a Crash Truck version of the 900 series called the "Airport Queen" Some features are from Crash Trucks that ALF made for the USAF. The ground Seep nozzles under the bumber are like that used on the O-11A rigs.

American LaFrance built only seven (7) of these 900 Series 4X4 "AIRPORT CHIEF" models. One went to Detroit City Airport in 1961. There were five (5) other massive 900 Series 6X6 "Airport Chiefs". None went to the USAF, or apparently to any U.S. military service.

Four of the massive 900 Series "Airport Chief" 6X6s were built for: Atlanta's Hartfield IAP; Seattle-Tacoma Airport, and for the Anchorage, and Fairbanks, Alaska airports. The fifth was built at the LaFrance-Foamite plant in Toronto for Vancouver IAP in 1960.

American LaFrance also introduced a boxy-looking, rectangular "AIRPORT CHIEF" family of airport crash-rescue trucks in 1963, looking almost as if it were based on the Pioneer Pumper, but there was no slanted windshield. Only six of this model of the "Airport Chief" were built, including one for Nassau IAP in 1964.

A "cousin" of the "AIRPORT CHIEF" was the 900 Series "BRISTOL FOAM PUMPER". This was a pumper, originally built in 1966 for Bristol, Connecticut, whence the name, and became an offering of the ALF 900 Series. They included hydraulic roof turrets and pump-and-roll capabilities. These were usually purchased by industrial cities, such as Jersey City, New Jersey, where two 1,250 gpm "Bristol Foam Pumpers" were put into service in 1968.

Most of the preceeding info is from the book, "100 YEARS OF AMERICAN LaFRANCE An Illustrated History" by Walter M.P. McCall; see page 131, where pictures can be seen of the 6X6 and 4X4 versions of the 900 SERIES "AIRPORT CHIEF". On page 133 can be seen a picture of the "rectangular" AIRPORT CHIEF, and pictures of the BRISTOL FOAM PUMPER can be seen on pages 134 and 135.
