From what is on the interweb, it appears that these things are referred to as ET6 or 500E, V-8 and 4cyl “cost cutter” petrol engines, and ET7 and 502E when diesel powered. The change of name is apparently attached to the make name applied, Fordson for the ET series and Thames for the later 500/2E models. Whatever this means, it seems that anything applied to still pictures from films will be a guess, unless you can see appropriate badges or hear them on the soundtrack. The petrol engines were very quiet, the gearbox being the predominant noise when on the move. The Perkins diesel has a sound all its own, while the Ford 4-D was a raucous old thing. I don’t recall much of the 6-D, presumably it was a smoother version of the smaller unit.

After all this, what do we call it?

Think we decided to stick with Thames ET6 for all variants.
Ford did not make it simple with their Fordson/Thames/ Ford malarkey !
