The sweep down spear is typical for the 1956 Clipper, when this was a separate make (so not a Packard...) I wonder if it is a sedan, to me it looks more like the Super Hardtop Coupe [5647]. |

I agree with DynaMike. Not a Packard but a Clipper...hard to tell model. |

It is indeed, but just and only in 1956 it was presented as a separate make... |

Sheesh, on the verge of bankruptcy, and they offered a whole new division? What was wrong with those people? |

Like with Cadillac and LaSalle, Packard was trying to spin off their less expensive model. They would have gone further in '57 and put the Clipper name on Studebaker bodies but the financial backing for this didn't materialize. |

A belated comment here re: Packard vs Clipper. There is controversy over whether or not the 1956 Clippers should be considered a separate make. At the begining of the model year, Packard appeared to intend to list the Clipper separately and removed the Packard name and reference in the advertising. However, during the course of the year, they changed their mind and began referring to them again as "Packard Clipper". "Packard" nameplates were shipped to Packard/Clipper dealers for installation on all new and unsold 1956 Clippers and were available to the public at no charge for addition to their '56 Clippers. I my mind, since this decision occurred during the course of the same model year, I regard Packard as retroactively designating all 1956's as "Packard Clippers" and feel they should be listed as such. -- Last edit: 2011-09-18 02:33:25 |

The "Panama" name was no longer used in 1956. That particular line was just the Clipper Super hardtop. (By contrast, the Custom line still used the "Constellation" name.) From this distance, we cannot tell if this is a Custom Constellation or a Super hardtop. The only exterior difference is the presence of rocker panel trim on the Constellation. |
