The 6 cwt HAE and heavy duty 8 cwt HAV models, September 1971 introduction for 1256cc engine in HA vans. If I remember right, the 8 cwt was sometimes called the HA DeLuxe van and had a chrome strip along the body not seen on the lesser model, although it might have changed through the long production life of the vehicle? -- Last edit: 2016-04-04 13:36:04 |

At the August 1964 introduction, the HAE 6 cwt and HAV 8 cwt have identical body shells, the main differences being that the 8 cwt. has a heavier rear axle and heavier rear springs and wheels (but the same 5-50-12, 6-ply tyres). Externally, the two versions are identifiable by the 8 cwt. being, in effect, a de luxe model with bright metal strips along the sides of the body, chrome-plated front and rear bumpers (instead of painted), a front grille of bright anodized aluminium (instead of commercial grade), a bright-metal insert to the windscreen surround and chrome-plated outside rear vision mirrors. Link to "archive.commercialmotor.com" Post Office and GPO-Telephones of course were ordering large contract for these vehicles, therefore special equipment mirrors, ladder-racks, paint finish as specified etc. were fitted or used on the production line. |

The chrome side strip version may be the 1973-ish Bedford HA Double Plus "luxury" version - with folding rear seats, metallic paint, black grille, roof-lining, carpets, wheel trim rings, twin wing mirrors and - really pushing the boat out - a heater. Seems to have been 6cwt only. I remember the metallic blue scheme - it looked pretty good for an HA van - not sure what other colours happened |

Good find dsl - I was never aware of that 'limited edition' HA van. The 8cwt model distinguished by "bright metal strips along the sides of the body", was always available from August 1964. Although as your Double Plus 'limited edition' version shows its usage was not solely for the heavier version. Bedford HA 8cwt (also 6cwt) vans 1964-65 |
