1966 UK D-plate Fiat 500 van based on Autobianchi body. A very rare sight here, but they were officially available. Question is what we call it - Autobianchi brand was invisible in UK. Open to comment/other ideas. -- Last edit: 2017-02-18 15:08:08 |

Good work, I was trying to work this one out, thought at first it was a Hillman van, then a Riley, but Google proved me wrong on both. |

I have been found this UK folder. |

^ Have captured that one for reference![]() Described as "Original UK market colour sales brochure illustrating & describing the Autobianchi Bianchina Van. Publication number UP 6108, dated August 1961 and covers 1961-1962 models. 4 page folder, well illustrated, English text." and clearly shows that Autobianchi was used as make at that point. Have been googling away and found a few other RHD UK examples - https://www.flickr.com/photos/homer----simpson/7857944370 , https://www.flickr.com/photos/46637666@N07/14251806224/ , https://www.flickr.com/photos/austin7nut/9392871180/ , https://www.flickr.com/photos/austin7nut/11355438284/ , https://www.flickr.com/photos/sherlock77/5839906/ (now in Canada!) , https://www.flickr.com/photos/60338281@N06/14539919938/ , Link to "commons.wikimedia.org").jpg . Titles vary on those pages, which have various Autobianchi or Fiat captions. The plates include AHY 221B (=1964), JCR 79E (=1967), RxM 432E (also = 1967), CRC 459J (=August 1970). Only JCR 79E and CRC 459J come up with plate checks, and both are registered as Fiat. Tried the permutations for RxM 432E, but blank. Noted also that we have another UK one in our collection - entered at the moment as 1962 Autobianchi Bianchina Furgoncino - which has a comment ... although londonitalian backs away from that Fiat statement in his next comment as no evidence found. But I agree with him. Plus there is the comment on one of the flicker pages that they were sold as a "Fiat 500 Bianchina Van". So enough indicators for 2 names used: - Autobianchi Bianchina Van (early 60s) - Fiat 500 Bianchina Van (mid-60s onwards - certainly 1967, but not sure how much earlier). I think best strategy for us is to use Autobianchi Bianchina Van for both our examples - easily found/retrieved and logical as it is a van version of the Autobianchi Bianchina. Can be revisited if we ever find evidence for date of name change. (My guess is that the other one is about 1966-68 as well for colour, film date and it's very shiny new looking). |

This one proved an interesting thread, will have to start uploading more from other 70's series. |

Glass's lists as Fiat 5cwt Bianchina [264], first imported July 61 - unchanged until dropped in July 70. No mention of Autobianchi. However suggest we leave ID unchanged after discussions above. -- Last edit: 2017-02-18 15:06:10 |

It's been puzzling me why they sold the Autobianchi van in UK instead of the simpler route of selling the ordinary Fiat 500 Van, which never appeared here. Then I had a light-bulb moment - the 500 Van always had rear-hinged doors, so maybe Fiat UK decided we needed front-hinged instead, which could only be provided by Autobianchi?? |
