Willys M38A1? |

Or a CJ5? Does the position of the spare wheel on the rear side forbid this to be a M381A1? |

This is a CJ5 of 1972 or later. The "long nose" CJs of 1972+ are best identified by the 4-6 inch crease in the trailing edge of the fender where the fender bolts to the cowling (just behind the front tire). This additional wheelbase/engine space allowed the straight 6 cyl engine that was used as base engine beginning '72, replacing the previous 4 cyl. Additionally the front spring perches are visible. This has the CJ style rear pivot/front shackle (except 1955)vs the M38A1 front pivot/rear shackle. The M38A1 also has a large round recess on the passenger side cowling that was an auxiliary power access point for radios and jump starts. Military Jeep spare tires are typically mounted on the rear, but so are many CJs. Most older CJ have a side mounted spare.A better view of the windshield would identify the change from 1975 to 1976+. |
