Looks like an E Series Vauxhall that got stretched widthways, so it may be aspect ratio problems or a Chevrolet. |

Definitely August 1951 on E-series Vauxhalls. The lighter car is a Velox, the darker car is a Wyvern, no Cresta with this frontal treatment. |

Both are open rear wing with 1952 grille; in UK would mean Wyvern, but depends where this is - Aus? NZ? ZA? Aus built Velox had open rear wings, so would be my guess. |

Look at the badges on the front of the bonnet. Larger chrome badge = Velox, smaller badge without chrome under it = Wyvern. If you are in doubt, look at page 160 of "British Family Cars of the Fifties" by M G D Allen, there is a reprint of a 1954 British Vauxhall advertisement showing both cars with open rear wings and the different styles of badge. I always check before going into print, wherever possible. On the opposite page of the book is a picture of OCR 825, a 1955 spec. Wyvern WITH rear wheel spats. The caption says that they were an optional extra on the four cylinder cars, and the cars' descriptive information says that they were introduced within the 1954 facelift, so spats are no guide at all for the cars prior to this change, as they weren't fitted prior to 1955, and were available as an extra thereafter on the Wyvern anyway. -- Last edit: 2014-10-31 21:05:31 |
