Maybe something like: /vehicle_448966-Bedford-TK-1963.html ? This is the front: Similar to this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ilove/years/1963/gallery/1024/obvan.html -- Last edit: 2013-06-15 21:07:08 |

More shots from this episode: Plate is 380 EXH - nothing from plate check sites, but Glass's gives "allocated in blocks" Aug 62 to March 64, London. My guess is that this series could have been allocated to BBC - 390 EXH (which I punched in just in case the 8 was wrong) revealingly comes up as a grey Commer - as most of these block issues went to big London-based organisations (local authority, Royal Mail, other utilities, London transport etc). |

This outside broadcast unit is thought to one of ten supplied to the BBC in 1962,on a commer chassis, but exact information on type of chassis, body builder etc all unknown. |

As above, it's not impossible this plate is 390 EXH registered as Commer, so if info on chassis/body can be found to suggest a match, it would be worth pursuing. |

Information has recently come to light describing them as commer control units with marshall bodies |

I can confirm that this vehicle is 390 EXH (Fleet No 388C), a Commer, probably a type C, four camera Mobile Control Room supplied to the BBC by Pye TVT not earlier than 1963. Some sources state that the bodywork is by Marshall, but I am still trying to find confirmation of that. It is one of the ten vehicles numbered MCR19-28 that the BBC acquired in anticipation of the start of BBC2 and its 625 line service in 1964. Some of the ten survived long enough to be repainted into the BBC colour livery. Dsl is right in the assumption that a batch of EXH reg numbers was allocated to the BBC, as at least 388-414 EXH were BBC vehicles, and probably more. -- Last edit: 2013-07-27 22:58:45 |

Commer 390EXH was road taxed until 2005 (dvla) so is probably still around , surprisingly can't find anything about these vans on net though, to take it off the unknown list of 3 Commers. -- Last edit: 2014-04-05 19:44:44 |

Another possible identification as a Commer C762 chassis with petrol engines, bodied by Marshall with cameras and electronics supplied by PYE TVT... https://www.flickr.com/photos/70063070@N08/8056857392/ |

Quite surprised they are not mentioned in Commercial Motor archive , but are we now safe to say C range ? |

C-Series is good I believe, by the registration date (not QX based rather Commer CA 1961-4 based) and front wheel design matches approx. 4-Ton or 5-Ton eight-stud slotted Commer wheels. Another later picture... http://www.na3t.org/road/photo/VS01645 |

The restoration site for this vehicle is: http://projectvivat.co.uk/Vivat/Home.html My friends Mark & Tony owned this vehicle for many years & I was the mechanic, driver, location manager/rigger for many shows we recorded using Bournemouth Film school students. It was bought from Brian Summers who had one of the sister MCR's (he had bought it for spares). If it were not for my wife & I having stripped the original paint off back to the alloy & having it sprayed in the grey paint, (reason the log book says Grey) plus keeping it drivable, I doubt it would be around for further restoration today! The vehicle returned to Brian Summers & was used as a play school room for some years. The vehicle also featured in an episode of Doctor Who with other defuncked BBC ob vehicles playing the role as army control vehicles. It is a Marshal Bodied Commer chassis,6 cylinder petrol engine, built in 1963, MCR23 (mobile control room). There is a photo here of one of the sister vans http://www.na3t.org/road/photo/VS01645 -- Last edit: 2015-09-11 22:15:25 |

Great info - this truck gets more and more interesting. Marshal of Cambridge seem to have a fairly exciting time building lots of different specialist stuff. |

^ They've been pretty busy over the years - fascinating diversity of things. Confirms "early state-of-the-art outside television broadcasting vehicles for the BBC" in relation to slight doubts in early comments here. |

More Marshall info from an article in a toy car magazine - seems another of their niche activities was horsebox lorry conversions with Matchbox's 1957 model #35a ERF Horsebox deliberately depicting a Marshall Motor Bodies Ltd design. The article has a very small photo of a Marshall brochure - not worth copying here - from 1949 with a similar but higher roof body on a bonneted Austin cab (maybe K2??). Maybe we have a few similar in our collection as yet unidentified eg perhaps Thames Traders, Bedford TK etc plus whatever earlier 50s chassis?? |
