![]() ![]() ![]() I've never seen one of these before - a spiked wheel tractor (effectively a bulldozer without the blade or belts) used as a lifeboat hauler on beaches by the RNLI. I assume it looks something like this: ![]() although this one at Chatham dockyard museum has different design (EDIT: and may be a Case - see link in later comment) - from Link to "www.steamandcountrycam.co.uk" . Also in the film pictures above, there is a blue trailer behind which gets very confusing for what actually belongs to the Fowler. DVLA details for PLA 561 are: Date of Liability 01 01 1991 Date of First Registration 05 11 1954 Year of Manufacture Not Available Cylinder Capacity (cc) Not Available CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type HEAVY OIL Export Marker N Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour BLUE Vehicle Type Approval Not Available. -- Last edit: 2015-12-20 22:59:55 |

You mean this? Fowler's also made trucks in the early 1930s using their six cylinder diesel engine. They gave up on trucks in 1935 to concentrate on agricutural tractors and machinery, this being presumably developed from one of their crawler tractor designs. http://www.flickr.com/photos/homer----simpson/4614954364/ Link to "www.i-bidder.com" Link to "archive.commercialmotor.com" -- Last edit: 2013-05-02 17:06:38 |

Yes - looks identical. Googling that registration - PXF 163 - leads amongst other things to - http://www.hoylakejunction.com/friday-photo-110708 - with a long string of interesting comments, including at the end: "T63 is indeed a Fowler Challenger III, one of 13 built for the RNLI between 1953 and 1960. They were standard Fowler Challenger IIIs waterproofed for the RNLI by the manufacturer. All had a 95 hp Meadows diesel engine. ....... BTW Julian is mistaken; the RNLI have never converted any of their crawler tractors from old bulldozers! All their official tractors, like their boats, were always brand new and the very best machines that money could buy." |

Also http://www.ceforum.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-757.html has a lot of discussion in the small print and identifies several of the 13 registrations against their RNLI Txx numbers, but not our PLA 561. (Has some discussion as well of RNLI Case tractors as the Chatham photo above). -- Last edit: 2013-05-02 17:57:24 |
