And not an Impala? |

Can't say if it is an Impala or Caprice as you can't really see the front signal light clearly. If it is a wrap around light, it is a Caprice Classic. If it has just a side marker, it's an Impala. By the rocker trim, I'd say Impala, as the Caprice usually had thicker trim. Impala: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" Caprice: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" |

By the way, this is Landau Coupe. |

Are you sure it's a Landau Coupe? I can't see a vinyl top. Landau Coupe (shown as a Caprice): Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" Impala Coupe: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" |

The Landau Coupe has unique rear window with folded inseam side windows compare to the regular Coupe. In this case, it doesn't have the optional vinyl top on it. Here is what the Landau Coupe looks like in the Caprice Classic/Impala series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1978-Chevrolet---Caprice.jpg -- Last edit: 2013-02-05 13:48:34 |

That's incorrect, Landau was an option pacakage referring to a vinyl top package. Look at the photots I posted, the Impala without the vinyl top is just the "Impala Coupe". The Caprice with the half vinyl top is the "Landau coupe", which the brochure states "avaiable on Caprice Classic and Impala". This is straight from GM literature. The Landau option always included a vinyl top; the Landau top is a half vinyl roof. All 1977-79 Caprice and Impalas coupes had the bent glass rear back window, but not all were "Landau", this was an option package. -- Last edit: 2013-02-05 14:10:45 |

Hmm.. ![]() Okay, how can we differentiate between those two coupe style that we find here. ![]() |

I am pretty certain a Landau package always included a half vinyl top, that's what a Landau top is. Typically, it was the rear section of the roof, but on these Impalas and Caprices it was the front section. I have owned a couple of Landaus and used to work for a GM dealer, and the only ones I have seen without a vinyl top were the ones where the owner removed them. I have 75 years of Chevrolet too (1992 Edition), and from page 458 by a 1978 Caprice Classic Landau "In the Caprice Classic line, as in the plain Impala Series, the Model L47 Coupe was available in either standard form or as the Landau model shown here....The Landau equipment included a vinyl half-roof, pin striping and dual sport mirrors." |

@caprice_96: I see you have expertise here ![]() I'll try to keep my mind open and we can always find something here odd ![]() |

rjluna2, when I hear Landau, I automatically think vinyl top. That's all that caught my eye. So is the consenses that this is just an Impala Coupe then? |

Here is the regular coupe: /vehicle_328280-Chevrolet-Impala-1977.html Here is another Landau Coupe without the vinyl top: /vehicle_243616-Chevrolet-Impala-1978.html |

I don't know what more evidence you need. What makes the second car a landau? Did you not read the quote from 75 years of Chevrolet? Did you not see the orginal GM brochure? These are reputable sources. ALL 1977-79 Caprice and Impala coupes had the "bent glass" semi-fastback rear window - this was not a Landau option. Both pictures you show have the same rear back light, although in the regular coupe photo it's hard to see, but it's there. You said you have 75 years of Chevrolet, look at the book, all 2-door Caprice/Impala's have that window and the only ones labeled Landau have vinyl tops - because that is part of the Landau option. Bottom line, the car in the picture is an Impala coupe, not a Landau. |

I went over Tad Burness' American Car Spotter's Bible 1940-1980 and did find the one you described. I also re-read the Dammann book and other site to find what you did described. My sincerely apology ![]() Please change this to Coupe instead of Landau Coupe. Thank you. |
