And: is it common in Southern Africa to import used Japanese cars in bigger amounts, or aren't the local markets protected to keep the local production? :think:

IIRC South Africa and Zimbabwe are the only countries in southern Africa with any car manufacturing. Botswana doesn't have any local industry to protect. And, as you've seen, the Soarer is definitely JDM.

Yes I agree with MkII van - note high riding rear end. It will mot be an MX model but will have one of the four cylinder engines - probably 1800 petrol? Not sure which letter code though. This model was produced from 1984 right through to 1997 - no doubt with minor trim and grille changes.

Botswana is quite known for getting their cars directly from the East instead of using Za-built versions. This has declined in recent years due to trade treaties within the Southern African Development Community (SADEC), but we still see some coming through.
