Could be a Ford Laser as well. |

What was its name in South Africa? |

Here's the blurb froom Wiki about the Ford: South Africa The Laser was introduced in South Africa in 1986, as a hatchback, with the sedan version being sold as the Meteor. Replacing the Ford Escort, it was produced alongside the Mazda 323 by Samcor. The Laser was already sold in Zimbabwe, where the previous generation model had been introduced in 1981. The KC/KE Laser and Meteor remained in production in South Africa until 1995, when the Escort was reintroduced. However, Ford introduced an entry-level model called the Tonic, a rebadged version of the last version of KF hatchack Mazda 323 (VI gen), which was sold until 2003. -- Last edit: 2011-03-27 22:04:59 |

Here in NZ the Laser and the 323 used different grilles so they were quite easily distinguished. Not sure with these ones but I would think Mazda. |

Doing research on the Mazda, shows that the BF model was produced until 2003 in South Africa. I checked some used car sites and found several models for sale. There was a change in the bumpers somewhere between 1995 and 1998. The 1995 model I found had regular black bumpers, the 1998 model looks like the bumper and lower body valance were one piece, like this one. Also looks like the later models were called the Mazda 323 Midge. |

Sorry guys, I was offline for a while. Phew, a lot of correct comments! This one, taking everything into account, I would say is a Mazda Sting (the Midge name being reserved for hatchbacks, IIRC). |
