Only the XE trim (base model) received this rare black rear fascia from 1995-1997. I invested a decent amount of time into researching this and it appears 1998-1999 XE models received the red rear fascia. I could be wrong as there aren't a whole lot of XE models to go off (apparently an extremely rare trim level). I know the Altima of this time period was extremely rare in XE trim as well. I guess Nissan thought the US market wanted bare bones cars...didn't seem to be a big seller as we barely have any existing examples that are unmolested to go off.
