The Maxwell pictured is from 1922-24. Maxwell's last year (1925) featured an unpainted radiator shell, as shown, but the nameplate in that year was predominately white. The '22-24 models used the dark blue nameplate, which is evident. Since this Maxwell has retrofitted (incorrect) headlamps, it is not implausible that the radiator shell had been stripped of paint. On Jack Benny's radio and television shows, it had been mentioned a number of times that his Maxwell was a 1923, though it is doubtful that the same Maxwell was used. -- Last edit: 2009-01-18 06:26:03 |

The two long running jokes in the Jack Benny Program, both on radio and TV, concerned firstly his age, he maintained that he was 39 for years and years, and secondly his meanness with money. This meanness would explain the apparent incongruity of a Maxwell appearing in what looks like a sixties picture. I have a recording of a tune called "The Sound Effects Man" by Spike Jones and his City Slickers, dated 1943, which refers to "Benny's old Maxwell, chugging down the road", so that joke must have lasted at least twenty years. |

Mel Blanc (a frequent guest star on Benny's shows) originally "did" the sound effects for the Maxwell. |

Model 25 (or variations of it) was the model designation used by Maxwell from 1914-1925. |

I'm listening to all the old Jack Benny radio shows in order, and the year very frequently changes. When he first announced his purchase of it (he traded his Stanley Steamer for it), it was a 1920 (the color, he specified, was "a sort of a plaid'). Then in a later episode it was a 1923, then even later called a 1921. During the war, he claimed to have given away his Maxwell as part of a war scrap drive, then used the money to buy another one, which was even worse. I think this one was pretty consistently called a 1923. |
