![]() http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW_181 Wikipedia says: - the 181 for Germany and europe were built in Germany, 57.574 in Wolfsburg from 1968 until 1974, 10.629 car in Hannover (1974/75), then 2323 car in Emden until the end in 1978. - in the USA were mounted CKD-kits in 1970/71 - since 1972 in Puebla/Mexico -they got the elephantfoot-backlamps already then, not in 1974! - the official selling in the USA stopped in early 1975 because it failed the US-crash-standards. - though the Mexican production continued until 1980, 64.254 car were made there. But it's nothing written about the Indonesian assembly line ![]() |

For the 1303 yes, for the 1200, too (in 1973 or 1974). I thought also, that the Mexican made Safari/Thing came later ![]() |

Starting in 1975 few Safaris made in Mexico were sent to Germany this continued on and off depending if there was an over production in Mexico or a strike in Germany. No CKD-kits were assambled in the USA ever. Production started in Puebla Mexico on october 1970 as 1971 model cars with CKD body kits untill presses from WWII were sent to Mexico from Germany to start production of stamped body parts in late 1972. The mexican power train was always produced in Mexico. Elephant rear lights were first used for the 1973 model VW Thing only since the USA regulations required a larger area of rear lights and they had to be seen from the side so they had to stand far from the body. They remained small in Mexico for the entire 1973 model only to grow in 1974 into the elephant tipe. Indonesia assambled their first cars in 1972 as 182s (right hand wheel) and their numbers would not add since their first cars were german CKD kits, then they received mexican CKD kits and finally they imported assambled cars from Mexico. |

Being that it is a 4 star car can you post thumbs? We might want to change out the main all together and choose a better shot which I am sure exists for a 4 star vehicle. Oops. We might choose one of those. 2nd thumb looks good for a replacement main to me. -- Last edit: 2022-08-24 22:29:24 |
