Why was the fifth and sixth wheel necessary?

For weight distribution so it won't bog down on soft surface.

earlier ,similar german vehicles were built on existing 6x4 truck chassis (tatra, praga etc)..the G4 was just a carry on from that..but was made from the ground up as a heavy personnel car with a purpose built chassis..its 6x4 configurarion, meaning the front wheels were not powered..the back 4 were powered.

not necessarily..it was only associated with hitler because he was ferried around in a parade polished one..it was actually a standard heavy passenger car for the german military..often painted grey with front/rear MG34 mounts..and sometimes had a rear bracket fitted across the trunk for carrying a motorcycle.
