This scene was the reenactment of the crash of the team's chartered plane; Southern Airways flight 932 that occurred at the hill short of Runway 11 (now Runway 12) at the Tri State Airport near Ceredo in Wayne County, West Virginia on the night of the 14th November 1970. At the time of the crash, the university's athletic teams didn't usually travelled by plane to their away games as they were in driving distance of the campus. Prior to the crash, the football team had originally planned to cancel the flight but they changed their plans and decided to chartered the DC-9. This crash was the second time that a plane carrying a university football team to crash as a another plane carrying the Wichita State University Football Team crashed 8 miles (13km) west of Silver Plume near the Loveland Ski Area in Clear Creek County, Colorado on the afternoon of the 2nd October 1970. In that plane crash, the plane (call-sign Gold) was one of two of Martin 4-0-4 (the other one call-sign Black) charted by the Wichita State University as their charted plane; a DC-6B was damaged and made unavailable for use. -- Last edit: 2020-08-07 15:17:09 |
