I guess this is a 1500 Automatic. Was it introduced for 1962, at the same time as the 'normal' 1500 Stufenheck? |

No, the automatic was launched in 1967: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW_1500 |

P.S. The presentation of the Type 3 was in 1961. |

It probably don´t read Automatic on that badge, even if it was a good guess. The badges looks more like these from 1963, but with 1500 on top instead: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/63allabout/back.jpg Other early cars I´ve found pics of, modelyear 1962, have either no badge (probably pre-production cars in first print of sales literature) or just 1500 on a slightly larger badge. I suppose it might have differed a little depending on the years but I can´t pin down the exact one. Later cars look like this: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/66notch_variant_german/page14.jpg The Type 3 1500 didn´t come with automatic transmission, it was introduced as modelyear 1968 on the Type 3, then called VW 1600. If the car here would have been a basic 1600 it wouldn´t have had overriders on the bumpers. A 1600 L had overriders, but also sidetrim and rear reflectors with chrome wrapped around the corner like 1500 S or 1600 TL. So I believe this would be a 1963-65 1500 |
